Alison, Nicole and I decided to head to Montrose for our last day in Colorado. We visited the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park based on a recommendation but without really knowing what we were getting into.
This place bills itself out as the Grand Canyon of Colorado. I've never been to the actual Grand Canyon, so can't compare the two. This one big enough that it was hard to wrap my mind around the sheer scale we were staring at. The pictures just don't do it justice . . . but I'll post them anyway. If you click on any of them, you'll see jawdropping backdrops.
We were surprised by the fact there were hardly any other people visiting this natural wonder even though we were there on a Saturday during the peak season. Their marketing department needs to step it up a notch.
Turns out this national park has 12 turnarounds along the South Rim where you can drive and take a short hikes to enjoy different views and posted information on what you're looking at. There was also Warner Point that required a slightly longer hike but was well worth it! We hit all the points that afternoon, and even made it back to Sunset View for views of the sunset.
Seeing the Black Canyon from 12 vantage points - amazing! Looks from the park ranger when we ask how far to get to the north rim: priceless. (The answer was 94 miles).
Thanks gals for a great day!
